The Hurt and The Healing

This week, I wrote about a man whose brother was killed in a hit-and-run accident on Easter Sunday morning. He was riding his bike when he was struck from behind.

No one has been charged in the case and its been nearly three months.

The brother told me he got tired of waiting for something to happen so he’s taken justice into his own hands. He sat at the spot where his brother died with signs reading, “Justice for Rob Crawford.”

I hope he gets answers. I hope someone is held accountable.

One year ago, a Georgia Tech professor vacationing in my town was riding his bicycle along a scenic road when he was hit. The driver, again, did not stop.

A teenage girl who refused to be interviewed was thought to be the driver. She was never arrested, she was never charged. Where is justice?

In 2002, a 15-year-old girl walking on the sidewalk was struck when a drunk driver could not stay on the road. She was on vacation with her family at the time.

Every year since then her mother has come to the spot where she died and set up a vigil. Then, as part of the tradition, she visits the Sheriff’s Office to see if any progress has been made.

Last year, she told me they had a suspect, but no witnesses to put him behind the wheel — because of that he continues to be a free man.

Yesterday, a 20-year-old girl who had been in a persistent coma went to be with the Lord. She was riding her bicycle when she was hit by a vehicle. The driver did not stop.

Where is the courage? Where is the humanity? Where is justice?

In this instance, the woman driving the vehicle turned herself in. Sadly, her likely charge will be leaving the scene with injury, which has a maximum sentence of only five years.

I don’t know what I’m hoping to accomplish with this, but I want something to be done. I want people to be accountable. I want justice for Robert, Kurt, Shelly, Rebecca.

Thank you.Our loss continues. How can I express this loss.People may do very bad things but we may also learn to give absolution to the same if they were to confess.Forget what your lawyer says, come clean. You could be surprised by what happens.
