Vacation Station

I just got back from a week-long vacation.

I technically haven’t worked a full day in 11 days. Getting back this morning was so surreal.

I drove to work on autopilot. I forgot how early 5 a.m. can be.

When I got in I was inundated with emails, notes, voicemail … I was clearly missed.

Now I’m back to it. Last night, I felt like I was getting ready for the first day of school. I knew where I was going and what I would be getting into but it felt like something new.

When I got in it became more familiar. I didn’t exactly miss work and it feels weird to be back.

I think getting into the swing of things is going to be a challenge.

Back to the Grind

I feel like in most places if you’re gone for a couple days it feels like you’ve missed out on quite a bit.

In the newspaper world, it feels like you’ve missed a year when you’re out three days.

I got back from a short vacation yesterday and the world seemed to have turned upside down. I missed a murder, an in-house fight and about a gazillion emails.

It was nice getting away. Honestly, it was needed.

But as soon as I got back I was drowning with the work I was told to make up. It made me think, is vacation worth the overload you have to take on as soon as you get back?

So, back to the grind I go – hopefully, I’ll catch up one of these days.

Break, Please?

It’s been awhile since I’ve had a legitimate break. By “awhile” I mean I haven’t gone on vacation since I started working last August.

I’m dying.

This week I will be working from Sunday to Saturday. That’s six days if your math skills aren’t so hot. Then I get Saturday off and I’m back to it Sunday.

I sound whiny, I know.

The thing is I’m feeling burnt out at the ripe ole age of 23. Two years in and I feel like I’ve given it all I’ve got.

But this Thursday I finally get a break. And by break I don’t mean like the one day off because I was sick. I’ll be away from the office for five whole days. FIVE DAYS!

I never thought I would need a break so badly, but I feel like I’m running on nothing these days.

I guess a lot of it has to do with the fact that my schedule has been overloaded even more than usual.

I’m working on two Sunday centerpiece stories all at the same time, and both of them have required extensive research and a lot of man hours.

One of them launched today. For each story I had to make a database to go along with it, and for one I also had to include a photo gallery.

It’s been overwhelming to say the least. But of those centerpieces the one launched was my wacky “Eyesores” idea. And surprisingly, it’s doing awesome.

Day one, the photo gallery has almost 35,000 page views. The story has nearly 3,000. And the database … well I have no clue because my brain capacity can only store so much information but I’m thinking it’s doing pretty good.

So here’s to the last couple of days until the final stretch!
